Abstract:

The Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group, or GeoMAC, developed and currently supports an Internet-based mapping tool originally designed for fire managers to access online maps of current wildland fire locations and perimeters in the continental United States, including Alaska. Wildland fire perimeters are submitted to GeoMAC by the incident commands via posting to FTP and Web sites for downloading. This file contains all wildland fire perimeters that were submitted to GeoMAC for the indicated year. The projection is geographic and the datum is NAD83.

Wildland fire perimeter data displayed in and delivered by the GeoMAC application are not the final or official perimeters for any incident and are provided for informational purposes only. The final official wildland fire perimeter should be obtained from the host unit, which can be determined by looking at the Unit ID for any specific fire. The host unit is responsible for producing official and final perimeters for all incidents in their jurisdiction.

Wildland fire perimeter data provided by the Geomac site are derived from data produced by GIS specialists working on each incident. The data are posted by the incidents to various FTP and Web sites and then located and downloaded daily during the active fire season.

The wildland fire perimeter data are evaluated for completeness and processed to reflect consistent field names and attributes: Attributes are added to shapefiles according to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards (<http://www.nwcg.gov/pmu/pmo-archive/products/stds/gdl_fire_perimeter/cover.htm>) to include: TIME, COMMENTS, DATE UPLOADED, YEAR, and ACTIVE, which are populated as appropriate. AGENCY, UNIT ID, FIRE NAME, and FIRE NUMBER are also populated according to FireCode information at https://www.firecode.gov.

Acreage for each shapefile is calculated via Visual Basic code utilizing ArcGIS geoprocessing.

Shapefiles are projected to geographic decimal degrees in NAD83.

Wildland fire perimeter shapefiles are uploaded to ArcSDE (Arc Spatial Database Engine) databases on SQL (Structured Query Language) Server databases, and the data are served by the GeoMAC application via a ArcGIS REST services.
