Abstract:
The Geospatial Multi-Agency Coordination Group, or GeoMAC, is an internet-based mapping tool originally designed for fire managers to access online maps of current fire locations and perimeters in the continental United States, including Alaska. Perimeters are submitted to GeoMAC by the incidents via FTP and web sites for downloading. This file contains fire perimeters submitted to GeoMAC from the year 2000 to the previous calendar year. The projection is geographic and the datum is NAD83.

While every effort is made to provide accurate and complete information, there may be gaps in daily coverage. Please note: Files only contain perimeter data as they are submitted by the incidents. Files do not contain all fires. This data are not the authoritative fire perimeter data and should not be used as such.

Wildland fire perimeter data displayed in and delivered by the GeoMAC application are not the final or official perimeters for any incident and are provided for informational purposes only. The final official perimeter should be obtained from the host unit which can be determined by the UNIT_ID for any specific fire. The host unit is responsible for producing official and final perimeters for all incidents in their jurisdiction.

Process_Description:
Wildland fire perimeter data are submitted by the incidents and posted to web sites and HTTP sites for downloading. The perimeters are attributed according to National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) standards. Projection and topology are verified, single fire versus fire complex issues are resolved, and perimeters are loaded to SQL Server Databases. Data is then served by the GeoMAC web application (www.geomac.gov) via ArcGIS Server REST services and posted for distribution on the HTTP site: <http://rmgsc.cr.usgs.gov/outgoing/GeoMAC/historic_fire_data/>

GeoMAC annual wildland fire perimeters are loaded to the historic layer on an as-needed basis. From the years 2000 through 2010, if there were multiple polygons for the same fire, they were combined, and the acreage of the combined polygon recalculated to show only one polygon per fire. For the years 2011 and beyond, for fires with the same name, only the fire with the latest date and time is shown.
